NEL’s Portfolio of Investee Companies

NEL holds shares in seven companies, four of which are in the energy sector. Combined, NEL’s investee portfolio companies employ a substantial portion of Trinidad and Tobago’s workforce and are facilitators for local innovation and development of expertise. Shareholders consist of both corporate and individual investors with over 5,000 citizens of Trinidad and Tobago having the opportunity to earn dividends and appreciation through their investments in NEL’s portfolio of investee companies.

Trinidad Nitrogen Company Limited (TRINGEN) is one of the oldest operating facilities on the Point Lisas Industrial Estate. It is a limited liability company, of which 51% is owned by National Enterprises Limited (NEL) and 49% by Yara Caribbean (2002) Ltd.

TRINGEN manufactures anhydrous ammonia at two (2) independent production plants - TRINGEN I and TRINGEN II. It is run, via a management and operating agreement, by Yara Trinidad Limited a wholly owned subsidiary of Yara Caribbean (2002) Limited. Through its management contract with Yara, the company exports to many countries and is a competitive producer in the international market.

The National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago (NGC) is a key player in the development of the local natural gas industry of Trinidad and Tobago. Established by the Government of Trinidad and Tobago in August 1975, NGC is today an international investment grade company. One of its main subsidiaries is NGC NGL Company of Trinidad and Tobago Limited (NGC NGL).

This is a holding company with 51.0% shareholding in Phoenix Park Gas Processors Limited (PPGPL). PPGPL is one of the largest, most efficient gas processing facilities in the Americas. The processing leads to the fractionation of natural gas liquids into propane, butane and natural gasoline which are then marketed across the Caribbean and Central America. The company has successfully increased its operational efficiencies and has a number of new initiatives that are aimed at positively impacting its financial performance.

Pan West Engineers and Constructors LLC was a wholly owned subsidiary of General Electric Capital Corporation. Its acquisition came about through a successful collaboration of Trinidad & Tobago’s three leading investors – NEL, The National Insurance Board and the Unit Trust Corporation.

This procurement provided each of these investment companies with a 33.3% stake in the business as well as a combined, 10% ownership of Phoenix Park Gas Processors Limited. NEL’s increased participation in the energy sector and significant stake in this profitably run Company provide Shareholders with consistent benefits.

NEL Power Holdings Limited (NPHL) is a 100% owned subsidiary of National Enterprises Limited and retains 10.0% shareholding in the Power Generation Company of Trinidad and Tobago Limited (PowerGen). NEL acquired this shareholding when it purchased Amoco Trinidad Power Resources Corporation from BP.

PowerGen generates power for supply in bulk form, to the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) which distributes to its industrial, commercial, and residential customers. One of the company’s most significant accomplishments was the completion of its Flange-to-Flange project at its Penal plant. The back-to-back extraction and installation of this major piece of equipment was a landmark achievement. It was the first time that a project of this complexity was successfully completed outside of North America.

The National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago LNG Limited (NGC LNG) is an associate company of NGC. As a holding company it maintains 10% shareholding in Atlantic LNG 1.

Located in Point Fortin, Atlantic LNG 1 was established in 1995 and was the first train to develop liquified natural gas. By 1999 the first shipment was made.

Currently there are four trains set up in Pt. Fortin making Atlantic LNG the sixth largest exporter of LNG in the world. Shareholders in ALNG1 include international energy companies such as BP, Shell, and Suez. National Enterprises Limited has 37.84% shareholding in NGC LNG enabling NEL’s shareholders the ability to participate in the energy sector of Trinidad and Tobago.

National Flour Mills 
(NFM) Limited

Sector: Manufacturing  National Flour Mills Limited (NFM) is owned by National Enterprises Limited with 51.0% shareholding. NFM was established as a public trading company and for fifty (50) years has been contributing to the nation’s food security. Commencing operations as Trinidad Flour Mills in 1966, NFM has over the years expanded its operations to include a wide range of items and is one of the largest local suppliers of feeds to the agriculture sector. It produces flour, dry mixes, pet food, livestock feed as well as packaged rice, bottled cooking oil, and other consumables such as coconut milk, instant yeast and ginger tea. Its core business has been wheat-based with a product line that consists of - all-purpose flour, baker’s flour, whole wheat flour, cake flour, self-rising flour, breading flour, wheat germ, wheat bran, wheat cereal and cracked wheat flour.
